The Royal Bafokeng Stadium is situated in Rustenburg in northwestern South Africa. It is located on the Highveld Plateau 1,500 metres above sea level and has a capacity of 42,000, making it the smallest World Cup stadium in South Africa.
As the stadium was only built in 1995 for the Rugby World Cup, only a few modernisation measures were required here. These included video screens, floodlights, a new sound system and an increase of its capacity to 42,000 seats.
Confederation Cup matches were first held in the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in 2009, including the match for 3rd place. The stadium belongs to the "Royal Bafokeng Nation", a tribe native to Rustenberg which managed to secure a 20% royalty in 1999 on all platinum taken from their territory.
